From 1984 to 1993 Dodge sold the Daytona, a front-wheel-drive hatchback that replaced the rear-drive Challenger and carried the Charger's mantle into the turbocharged eighties.
Background & Positioning
Dodge needed a sports coupe for the front-wheel-drive era, so it spun the Daytona off the Chrysler G-platform (itself a stretched K-car base). Slotting between the rear-drive Conquest and the larger Charger, the Daytona claimed the same Daytona 500–inspired name the brand had used on the 1969 Charger Daytona.
Design Evolution
Two major facelifts kept the Daytona fresh: a 1987 update that smoothed the nose and taillights, and a 1992 refresh with a cleaner grille and bumper treatment. Throughout its life it remained a three-door hatchback with a glassy fastback roofline measuring just 1,760 mm across the beam.
Generations & Rebadging
The first 1984–1986 models established the formula. The upscale Chrysler Laser arrived as the Daytona's near-identical twin, distinguished mainly by bright trim and extra equipment. After 1986, Laser branding faded, leaving the Daytona to carry Dodge’s performance coupe banner until the Mitsubishi-built Avenger arrived for 1995.
