Disguised by the Toyota badge, the Pixis Space is actually a Daihatsu-built kei car that quietly vanished from showrooms in 2017, making room for the Pixis Joy and leaving behind strict 3.4-metre city car dimensions that defined an era of Japanese urban mobility.
Design & Dimensions
At just 3 395 mm long, 1 475 mm wide and 1 640 mm tall, the Pixis Space obeyed Japan’s kei-car box to the millimetre. Its upright 820 kg body prioritised cabin width over aerodynamic flourish, resulting in a near-cube footprint ideal for narrow streets and tiny parking bays.
Brand Engineering
Though marketed as a Toyota, the Pixis Space was produced by Daihatsu under the long-standing OEM agreement that lets Toyota access the kei-car market without designing its own. This badge-sharing practice is common in Japan and allowed Toyota retailers to offer a Daihatsu-derived city car whose successor, the Pixis Joy, continues the arrangement.
End of an Era
After an undisclosed production run, Toyota retired the Pixis Space in 2017. Its direct replacement, the Pixis Joy, continued the same resource-sharing formula while adopting more contemporary styling cues and updated safety kit.
