Toyota Calya

Introduced in July 2016, the Toyota Calya is an Indonesian-market mini MPV built by Astra Daihatsu Motor and sold as the budget-friendly Toyota twin to the Daihatsu Sigra. Built to exploit Indonesia’s Low Cost Green Car incentives, it offers three-row seating in a 4,070 mm long body at a price point below the larger Toyota Xenia.
Origins and Purpose
Chief engineer Nobuhiko Ono created the Calya/Sigra pair just as Indonesia rolled out the Low Cost Green Car regulation, which removed luxury-goods tax from economical cars. By stretching the Ayla city-car platform and endowing it with three seating rows, Daihatsu and Toyota aimed straight at Indonesia’s appetite for affordable MPVs.
Design and Specifications
Although the Sigra and Calya share the same body, Toyota applied a different front fascia, grille, and badging to differentiate the Calya. At 4,070 mm long and 1,655 mm wide, the car sits only 1,600 mm tall, keeping the compact footprint that city traffic and tight parking demand while still fitting seven occupants across three rows.
Market Position
Positioned below the larger Toyota Xenia and Daihatsu Xenia twins, the Calya absorbs budget-conscious buyers who still insist on proper three-row capacity. Since its launch it has become a common sight on Indonesian roads and ride-hailing fleets, validating the strategy of rebadging the Daihatsu Sigra under the broader Toyota network.
