Introduced in December 2012 and positioned as the new entry in Japan’s crowded kei-car field, the Subaru Pleo Plus is a re-badged version of Daihatsu’s Mira e:S aimed at buyers seeking maximum interior space within the strict 3.4 m Kei size limit.
Origins & Re-badging
The Pleo Plus succeeds the first-generation Subaru Pleo and arrives wearing Subaru badges yet built by Daihatsu at its Japanese plants. It carries over the platform and powertrain of the Daihatsu Mira e:S launched in September 2011, while Toyota markets the same car as the Pixis Epoch introduced earlier in May 2012.
Design & Dimensions
Measuring exactly 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,500 mm tall, the Pleo Plus stretches the Kei-car footprint to within millimetres of the legal maximum. Its upright, boxy silhouette maximizes passenger and cargo volume despite its tiny external footprint.
Market Positioning
Launched on 21 December 2012, the Pleo Plus slots into Subaru’s domestic range as an economical urban runabout, emphasizing low running costs, tax advantages and easy parking rather than all-weather performance traditionally associated with the marque.
