Slotting underneath the contemporary Tanto in Daihatsu’s kei-car catalogue, the Tanto Exe premiered at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show and began Japanese sales on 24 December 2009, later wearing Subaru badges as the Lucra.
Introduction
Unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Daihatsu’s Tanto Exe arrived in dealerships on 24 December 2009 as a compact, value-oriented addition to the company’s kei-car range. Subaru added a second life to the design just four months later, launching the re-badged Lucra on 20 April 2010.
Design and Packaging
At only 3,395 mm long, the Tanto Exe sits at the absolute limit of Japan’s kei-car regulations, paired with a slim 1,475 mm width and tall 1,730 mm roofline to maximize interior volume within the strict footprint. The boxy silhouette prioritizes cabin space over long hood proportions, creating a highly space-efficient urban micro-van.
Model Lines
Beyond the standard Daihatsu Tanto Exe, Subaru marketed its own version called the Lucra. Aside of badging and minor trim differences, the Lucra carried the same 3395 mm body and shared identical mechanical components with its Daihatsu twin.
