Citroën rewrote automotive fundamentals when the Traction Avant arrived in 1934, giving the world the first mass-produced front-wheel-drive car with a semi-monocoque body and becoming the stepping-stone between the Rosalie and the revolutionary DS.
A New Layout for 1934
Engineers ditched rear-wheel-drive tradition and mounted the engine north-south above the front axle, feeding power directly to the same wheels. A welded steel semi-monocoque structure discarded the heavy separate chassis, cutting weight by roughly a third while improving rigidity and handling. Hydraulic brakes on all four wheels and independent front suspension were equally novel for a mass-market car.
Models and Production
Between 1934 and 1957 Citroën built seven-hundred-and-sixty-thousand saloons, estates and stretched commercial variants. Four- and six-cylinder engines powered both the compact four-door and the long-wheelbase "Commerciale" and "Familiale" with three-row seating. Dimensions of 4.65 m in length, 1.79 m width and 1.54 m height created spacious cabins that for years rivaled luxury brands.
Legacy
By proving front-drive and welded construction at Mercedes-level volumes, the Traction Avant laid the technical groundwork its successor, the 1955 Citroën DS, would refine. It remained a favorite among European police forces and resistance movements throughout WWII and was still a common sight on French roads into the 1960s.
