Generations
Dodge has released eight distinct Charger generations between 1966 and today. The original 1966–1978 run produced two-door muscle coupes; after a brief hiatus, the name returned in 1981 as a subcompact hatchback through 1987. A third major cycle began in 2006 and continues with the four-door performance sedan still sold in 2024.
Brand History
The Charger debuted under the Chrysler corporate umbrella and has always been marketed by Dodge, never by Chrysler itself. After the 1981–1987 hatchback experiment, the nameplate disappeared until 2006, when Dodge re-established it as a rear-wheel-drive sedan aligned with the Challenger and aimed squarely at North American buyers.

Continuously on sale for almost six decades, the Charger remains one of the few long-running U.S. nameplates to have spanned muscle-car, economy, and modern-performance eras.
