Debuting for 1959 as the successor to the stately Buick Roadmaster, the Electra became Buick's ultimate expression of post-war American luxury and remained its flagship sedan for more than three decades.
Design & Stature
At a lengthy 5,603 mm (220.6 in), the Electra rode on Buick’s longest wheelbase and carried restrained yet unmistakable chrome swagger. Each of its six generations refined tailfins, sweepspear profiles and cushy interiors reflecting the changing tastes of full-size sedan buyers from jet-age optimism to boxy post-oil-crisis comfort.
Body Styles
Buick offered the Electra as a four-door hardtop or sedan from launch, later adding plush two-door variants, a convertible in the early years, and even a five-door Estate station wagon that let the family hauler wear the Electra nameplate in chrome script.
Generations & Farewell
Spanning model years 1959–1990, six clearly defined generations saw the Electra evolve from 1959–60’s triple-carb fins to the downsized front-drive 1985–90 models. By 1991 the Park Avenue stepped in as successor, ending Buick’s longest-running flagship after 31 uninterrupted years.
Legacy
The Electra not only replaced the Roadmaster in showrooms but effectively replaced it in culture—synonymous with highway-cruising luxury for three decades. Its name still appears on Chinese-market Buicks today, keeping the badge in circulation long after 1990 U.S. production stopped.
