Built from 1932 to 1935, the Bugatti Type 55 transformed the company’s Grand Prix technology into a pure sports car for the street, giving well-heeled drivers race-level performance with road-legal manners.
Origins
Ettore Bugatti repurposed the successful Type 51 Grand Prix chassis for civilian use by adding lights, fenders, and minimal bodywork. The resulting Type 55 took the same mechanical core and wrapped it in lighter, more elegant coach-built forms suited to public roads.
Design and Engineering
Under the skin the car retained the double-overhead-cam straight-eight engine developed for Type 51 competition, tuned slightly lower yet still capable of remarkable output for the early 1930s. Lightweight alloy coachwork—often provided by external French carrossiers—kept curb weight low and emphasized sporting lines.
Legacy
Production closed after only three model years, making the Type 55 one of the rarest pre-war Bugattis. Surviving examples remain blue-chip collectibles, representing the direct bridge between the firm’s Grand Prix dominance and its early road-going super-sports heritage.
