Billed as the last big Wolseley saloons, the 6/99 debuted in 1959, sharing sheetmetal with the contemporary Austin Westminster and Vanden Plas Princess to become one of BMC’s most up-market six-cylinder offerings.
Design & Styling
Pininfarina delivered the core lines and proportions, after which BMC’s in-house stylists grafted on the trademark illuminated radiator grille and detail trim. At 4.77 m long and 1.53 m tall, the 6/99 cut a formal, chauffeur-ready silhouette that differed only subtly from its Austin and Vanden Plas siblings.
Generations & Updates
Launched in 1959 as the 6/99, the car was lightly facelifted for 1961 and rechristened 6/110. This updated version carried the Wolseley badge until production ceased in 1968, marking the end of the marque’s large-car line.
BMC Platform Sharing
BMC used the same pressed-steel shell across three marques: the Austin A99 (later A110) Westminster, the Vanden Plas Princess 3-Litre, and the Wolseley 6/99/6/110. Differences were limited to trim, axle ratios, and upholstery, allowing economies of scale without diluting each brand’s distinct grille and badging.
