Between 1958 and 1964, BMC Australia rolled out the Morris Major as a deliberate step up from the much-loved Morris Minor, giving families a slightly larger British saloon for Australian roads. Built alongside its badge-engineered twin, the Austin Lancer, it helped keep the company competitive in a market just beginning to favour mid-size cars.
Background and launch
Launched in May 1958, the Morris Major aimed to plug the gap left by the compact Morris Minor while previewing the engineering direction that would soon culminate in the ADO16 platform. It was assembled at BMC’s plants in Sydney and Melbourne, ensuring local content levels that satisfied Australian import regulations.
Design and engineering
At 1 500 mm wide, the Major sat on a longer wheelbase than the Minor, granting more rear-seat and luggage space while retaining an integrated monocoque body. Suspension was independent at the front via coil springs and wishbones, with a live rear axle supported by semi-elliptic leaf springs — an evolution of the Minor layout adapted for Australian driving conditions.
Market life and replacement
Sales ran for six model years, after which BMC folded the Major line into the new ADO16 programme that produced the Morris 1100 and Austin 1100. The shift signalled a move toward front-wheel-drive packaging, effectively ending the rear-drive ‘Major’ nameplate but continuing its positioning as a practical family saloon.
