Launched by Morris Commercial in 1956, the J2 was a compact forward-control van that rearranged Britain’s streets for a decade. Its engine-over-wheels layout maximised cargo room, foreshadowing the lighter commercial bustle of the 1960s.
History
Morris introduced the J2 at a moment when British business needed nimble, high-volume delivery vehicles. Production lasted from 1956 until 1967, after which the model was replaced by the Morris Commercial J4, continuing the family line with sharper styling and greater payload.
Design & Engineering
True to its forward-control configuration, the J2 placed the driver almost directly above the engine, freeing up the full length behind the cab for goods. Power came from BMC’s proven B-series engine: early vans ran a 1.5-litre unit, later enlarged to 1.6 litres for improved torque when fully laden.
Legacy
Though superseded by the J4, the J2 established a packaging template—compact footprint, maximum cargo—that influenced later British light commercials. Surviving examples now appear at classic commercial-vehicle shows, valued for their simple mechanicals and unmistakable cab-forward silhouette.
