Morris Commercial J4

Commercial vehicle specialist Morris Commercial introduced the J4 in 1960 as a bigger-capacity replacement for the ageing J-type, forging the template that would later evolve into the LDV Pilot.
History
The J4 was Britain’s answer to the booming small commercial market of the early 1960s. Produced by BMC across two facelifts, it remained in the line-up until 1974, bridging the gap between the wartime-era J-type and later forward-control vans such as the LDV Pilot.
Design & Engineering
Built on a compact 4 m-plus footprint—4,115 mm long, 1,753 mm wide and 2,057 mm tall—the J4 used a true forward-control layout to maximise load space within a tight turning circle. The high-roof, boxy body gave genuine walk-through access for 10 cwt payloads without extending wheelbase or overall length.
Legacy
After the 1974 curtain call, the design concept carried into the Leyland Pilot and later LDV iterations, keeping the British compact van relevant into the 1990s. Surviving J4s now serve as classic delivery restorations and retro-camper conversions, underlining its adaptable 1960s package.
