Launched in 1933, the Austin 12/4 (officially the Light Twelve-Four) replaced its straight-six predecessor with a smoother four-cylinder unit yet kept the well-known "12" tax-class designation that British buyers understood instantly.
Background & Launch
Austin introduced the Light Twelve-Four in 1933 as the immediate successor to the earlier Austin 12 that used a six-cylinder engine. The new car was designed to retain the popularity of the name while updating mechanicals to cope with 1930s fuel prices and road taxation rules.
Engineering & Dimensions
As the "12" in its title suggests, the car fell into the 12-horsepower British taxation class—an official rating based on cylinder dimensions and bore, not actual power output. The engine itself was a four-cylinder, delivering modest power sufficient for comfortable family motoring on pre-war British roads. The chassis measured 3 912 mm end-to-end, giving generous passenger space within the compact footprint common to British saloons of the era.
Production Span & Replacement
Austin manufactured the 12/4 from 1933 until 1939. In that year the model was completely replaced by an all-new car that nevertheless carried forward the same engine and, confusingly, the same Austin 12 name, effectively ending the Light Twelve-Four line.
