History
The Phantom VII marked the clean-sheet renaissance of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW had discreetly negotiated the right to use the Rolls-Royce name and trademark just weeks before the 1998 sale of the old Rolls-Royce Motors to Volkswagen. With the Goodwood design and manufacturing facility completed in 2003, the Phantom VII rolled out as the seventh iteration of a model lineage dating to 1925, superseding the final Phantom VI chassis produced in 1992.
Design
Stretching 5.8 metres long and 1.99 metres wide, the aluminium-spaceframe Phantom VII was conceived from the outset as a stealth flagship: essentially the same footprint as a Maybach yet visually more restrained. Signature rear-hinged ‘coach’ doors and the traditional Parthenon grille mounted slightly proud of the front wings instantly placed it within Rolls-Royce visual canon while hiding thoroughly modern LED and BMW-derived electrical architecture.
Engineering & Performance
An all-new 6.75-litre naturally aspirated V12—co-developed with BMW—delivered 453 bhp and 531 lb-ft of torque in silence suitable for a cathedral, routed through a six-speed ZF transmission. Double-wishbone air suspension, active anti-roll bars and self-levelling hydraulics preserved the brand’s trademark ‘waftability.’ From 2012 a direct-injection twin-turbo V12 upped output to 453 kW without breaking the upper 5-second 0–60 mph envelope.
Legacy
Beyond 15 years of production, the VII platform has underpinned long-wheelbase saloons, coupés, dropheads and the first modern Rolls-Royce SUV mules. It revitalised Goodwood as a true manufacturing centre, established the current naming convention (Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Dawn), and set the engineering cadence for aluminium spaceframes that continues in the 2023-current Phantom VIII.
