Unveiled in 2007 and produced until 2016, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé revived the marque’s open-top grand touring tradition after a five-year hiatus from the Rolls-Royce Corniche. Hand-built in Goodwood, England on BMW’s contemporary Phantom architecture, this two-door convertible positioned Rolls-Royce at the apex of modern luxury motoring.
Background & Launch
Premiering at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, the Phantom Drophead Coupé marked Rolls-Royce’s first full four-seat convertible since the Corniche ceased production in 2002. Sharing its aluminium spaceframe with the Phantom saloon, the model signalled BMW Group’s commitment to expanding the ultra-luxury line-up while staying faithful to traditional craftsmanship.
Design Language
At 5,609 mm long and 1,987 mm wide, the Drophead Coupé’s proportions follow classic yacht design cues: a long bonnet, sweeping rear deck, and optional teak tonneau boards that evoke wooden boat decking. The signature pantheon grille and rear-hinged ‘coach’ doors stretch the visual length, while a fast-acting fabric roof folds beneath an uninterrupted tonneau in 25 seconds.

Power comes from a 6.75-litre naturally aspirated V12 (later direct-injection) producing 453 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque, channelled through a six-speed ZF automatic. Air suspension with continuous damping delivers the signature ‘waftability’, and a 0–62 mph time of 5.8 seconds belies the model’s 2,620 kg kerb weight.
Legacy
Production ended in 2016 with no direct successor, leaving the Dawn and future electric models to carry the open-top mantle. Enthusiasts regard the Drophead Coupé as the definitive modern coach-built Roller—its hand-polished bodywork and bespoke interior options cementing its status as a 21st-century continuation of Rolls-Royce’s open luxury heritage.
