The BMW Zagato Coupe is a one-off design study created by the Italian coachbuilder Zagato on a BMW chassis, unveiled in 2012 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. It marries Bavarian engineering with Milanese coachbuilding flair, producing a hand-built reinterpretation of the modern BMW sports coupe.
Design
Drawn entirely in aluminum, the Zagato Coupe’s low-slung silhouette features Zagato’s signature double-bubble roofline stretched over a shortened BMW wheelbase. Distinctive Zagato cues—razor-sharp side strakes, a pinched Kamm-tail and concave rear window—sit atop a contemporary BMW face defined by LED-ringed headlights and enlarged kidney grilles finished in a dark chrome mesh.
Construction
Each panel was beaten and shaped by Zagato’s craftsmen in Milan, Italy, using traditional hammer-forming techniques before being welded to a bespoke, shortened under-structure supplied by BMW. The build took approximately six weeks of continuous work, producing a body that showcases impeccable shutlines and Zagato’s trademark flush-mounted glass.
Legacy
The Coupe debuted alongside its Roadster counterpart in 2012, instantly sparking collector interest and demonstrating Zagato’s enduring relevance in the 21st century. Though never intended for serial production, the car influenced later BMW concept cues—most visibly in the elongated hood-to-cabin proportions adopted by subsequent BMW Z4 studies—and remains a headline attraction at major concours events.
