Since its 2002 arrival, the BMW Z4 has carried the torch for BMW’s two-seat roadster line, moving beyond the Z3 with crisper styling and a fresh focus on balanced touring performance.
Origins
Introduced at the 2002 Paris Motor Show and hitting dealerships later that year, the E85-series Z4 immediately replaced the popular Z3. It advanced the platform with a longer wheelbase, wider track, and a distinctive flame-surface exterior penned by designer Chris Bangle.
Design Evolution
Across two subsequent generations—E89 (2009–2016) and G29 (2018–present)—the Z4’s proportions have shifted from hard-edged roadster to softer convertible. The folding metal roof of the E89 gave way to a cloth top on the G29, trimming weight and center of gravity while maintaining classic long-hood, short-deck cues.
Generations & Production
Z4 lifespans neatly divide: E85/E86 (2002–2008) in roadster and rare coupe form, E89 retractable-hardtop (2009–2016), and G29 soft-top co-developed with Toyota’s Supra from 2018 onward.
