Codenamed F85, the BMW X5 M is the M Division's high-performance take on BMW’s mid-size luxury SUV, turning the family-oriented X5 platform that debuted for 2014 into a 567-horsepower powerhouse.
Position in the X5 range
While the regular BMW X5 (F15) serves as a plush five-seat hauler for 2014 on, the X5 M stands in a class of its own. It is the sole full M model in the lineup, validated by engineers at BMW M GmbH and equipped with an M-Tuned V8. The M50d, offered at the same time, is branded an "M Performance Car"—faster than the base X5, but not hand-built or badged as a true M car.
Engine and chassis
From 2014 forward, the F85 X5 M bundles a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 producing 567 bhp and 553 lb-ft, channelled through an 8-speed M Steptronic auto to a rear-biased xDrive system. Adaptive M suspension, variable-ratio steering and 21-inch wheels deliver sports-saloon handling despite the two-and-a-half-ton curb weight.
Visual identity
Exterior cues include massive quad exhausts, widened front fenders accommodating 285-section tyres, and an M-specific rear diffuser. Inside, Merino leather, Alcantara headliner and an M digital cluster establish the track-ready luxury brief that sets it apart from the regular X5 cabin.
