Introduced in 2014, the BMW X4 carved out a niche within the booming compact-SUV segment by welding the tall stance of the X3 to the fastback roofline of a coupé. BMW called it a Sports Activity Coupé (SAC), signalling both intent and the promise of driver-focused dynamics. Now slated to end production in 2025, the X4 remains one of the clearest examples of a brand willing to shrink an idea first seen on the larger X6.
History and Positioning
BMW revealed the first-generation X4 in March 2014 as a 2015 model. Built on the same F26 chassis as the contemporary X3, it was deliberately pitched at buyers who wanted elevated driving height without the boxy utility of a traditional SUV. By 2021 a second-generation (G02) arrived, adding more technology and a fraction more rear headroom while keeping the trademark sloping roof. BMW confirmed 2025 as the final model year, meaning ten years of continuous production before the line bows out.
Design and Dimensions
The key design cue is the long hood that flows into a sharply dropping roofline, creating a two-box profile that sits 1 624 mm tall yet retains 4 671 mm of overall length. Width stands at 1 881 mm, giving the compact footprint the X4 shares with the X3. Engineers traded rear cargo volume—reduced by the coupe-like rear—for a sportier stance, tapered glasshouse, and frameless doors that keep visual mass low. Standard LED lighting and enlarged kidney grilles on later models reinforce the contemporary BMW aesthetic.
Legacy
As the second SAC after the larger X6, the X4 validated BMW’s strategy of injecting coupé silhouettes into the SUV market at a smaller scale. While never a volume leader—global sales peaked below those of the conventional X3—it attracted younger, style-conscious buyers and pushed rivals such as Mercedes-Benz (GLC Coupé) and Audi (Q5 Sportback) toward similar bodystyles. The coming end of production signals the close of the first decade-long chapter for the compact 4-door fastback SUV.
