Unveiled in 2017 as a sportier, sleeker companion to the X1, the BMW X2 (F39) sets out to bridge the gap between subcompact SUV and coupe.
Positioning and Design
BMW calls the X2 a ‘Sports Activity Coupé’ (SAC). Its roofline swoops lower and faster toward the rear than the taller X1, trading some rear headroom and cargo height for a coupe-like silhouette. Inside, the layout mirrors the BMW family with driver-focused controls, trademark iDrive screen, and sport seats trimmed in Vernasca leather or cloth/Alcantara on M Sport variants.
Engine and Driveline Choices
The F39 launched with three power tiers: the front-wheel-drive sDrive20i (2.0-L turbo petrol, 192 PS), the all-wheel xDrive20d (2.0-L turbo diesel, 190 PS) and range-topping M35i (2.0-L turbo petrol, 306 PS). All pair with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic; the M35i adds a launch-control feature cutting 0–100 km/h to 4.9 s.
Generations and Updates
Introduced as a 2018 model-year car, the F39 gained an LCI (life-cycle impulse) in late 2021 that brought slimmer LED lights, enlarged kidney grilles, revised bumpers, and BMW Operating System 7.0 with wireless Android Auto. No successor has yet been announced.
