BMW Vision ConnectedDrive

The low-slung roadster borrows the long-hood, short-tail proportions of classic sports cars but wraps them in strips of electro-luminescent light and overlapping glass panels. Instead of traditional doors or roof pillars, the body flows into transparent canopy sections that give passengers an unbroken panoramic view while exposing the lattice-like aluminum structure beneath.

At night, lines of LEDs trace the contours of the car, pulsing in patterns that communicate navigation prompts or safety alerts to surrounding traffic—an early instance of BMW exploring light as a primary interface.

Inside, each seat is enveloped by a three-layer information display: a head-up windshield layer, a mid-layer for gauges, and a tactile haptic screen on the center console. The system layers location data, traffic conditions, and calendar appointments in real time, giving drivers context-rich assistance without overwhelming the cabin with buttons.

BMW referred to the setup as “drive-through Internet,” using cloud connectivity to push software updates continuously and to adjust on-board services based on the driver’s typical routes and behavior.

Although never slated for production, Vision ConnectedDrive served as the styling and interface bridge between BMW’s earlier EfficientDynamics concepts and the i8 plug-in hybrid that arrived in 2014. The layered lighting language, curved HUD surfaces, and predictive cloud services later appeared—often simplified—across the 7 Series, iX, and i4, legitimizing the concept as a rolling R&D lab for user-experience rather than sheet-metal product planning.
