Slotting into the 2020s lineup as the latest BMW M3, the G80 generation turns the familiar sport-sedan recipe into something rawer and more controversial than any before it.
Design break
The G80 abandons the restrained lines of earlier M3s by grafting an oversized double-kidney grille—so tall the top edge meets the bonnet shut-line—onto an otherwise wide-track, four-door body. Squared-off arches, a carbon-fibre roof that forms a floating profile, and razor-edged LED lighting packages complete the visual punch.
Engineering
Much of the G80’s agility comes from BMW’s switch to an M xDrive rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, allowing torque vectoring and a fully rear-wheel mode. Adaptive dampers, electronically controlled limited-slip differential and carbon-ceramic brake options push lap-time benchmarks rather than highway comfort.
Legacy
By pairing classic M3 ingredients—straight-six, manual gearbox option—with controversial styling and new tech stack, the G80 forces a rethink of what a compact sport sedan should look like in the 2020s, laying the groundwork for BMW M’s evolving identity amid tougher emissions targets.
