BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid

Revealed as a show car, the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid previewed a V8-assisted gasoline-electric drive system for BMW’s coupe-like SUV years before the production ActiveHybrid X6 reached dealerships.
Concept Purpose
Displayed on the 2007 auto-show circuit, the Concept X6 ActiveHybrid served to validate BMW’s emerging EfficientDynamics strategy. It demonstrated how the brand could mate a high-output V8 with twin electric motors inside the same chassis architecture that would soon underpin the first-ever BMW hybrid production vehicle.
Powertrain Preview
While the concept bore no final EPA or DIN figures, BMW stated the hardware consisted of a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 paired with a dual-mode hybrid transmission. This layout later reappeared—essentially unchanged—in the 2009 production ActiveHybrid X6, confirming the concept’s role as a direct engineering mule rather than a styling exercise.
Design Language
Visually, the concept matched the production X6 launched the same year: a wide-shouldered fastback profile, broad kidney grilles, and 21-inch wheels. Energy-flow graphics in the instrument cluster and unique blue-painted brake calipers were the only outward signals of its electrified internals.
