Slotting above the BMW 3 Series yet sharing roots with it, the BMW 4 Series is the brand’s luxury compact coupe line that re-categorised two-door performance into a standalone family during the 2010s.
Origin and naming
Introduced for the 2014 model year, the 4 Series was born when BMW split its two-door 3 Series variants into an independent model line. The numeric jump underscored sportier proportions while letting the 3 Series focus on sedans and wagons.
Market position
Positioned as a luxury compact coupe, the 4 Series competes directly with the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. Buyers gain a lower roofline, wider stance and more overtly sporting chassis tune than the sedan it replaced.
Design differences
Compared to the 3 Series, every 4 Series body—coupe, convertible, and the later Gran Coupe—rides on a stretched wheelbase with reduced ride height. The signature Hofmeister kink migrates rearward, framed by sharply tapered glass and frameless doors.
