BMW 3 Series (E46)

From 1997 through 2006, BMW built the fourth generation of its 3 Series compact executive line, the E46. Offered in every passenger-car silhouette imaginable—from coupe to soft-top, wagon to Compact hatch—it cemented the model’s reputation as the benchmark sports-luxury family car.
History
Unveiled in November 1997, the E46 replaced the E36 3 Series and overlapped for two years until the E36 bowed out in 2000. Production ran worldwide through 2006, covering eight full model years that cemented BMW’s mid-size sales dominance and set the table for the subsequent E90 generation.
Body Styles
Buyers chose from five distinct body styles: classic four-door sedan, sleek two-door coupe, open-air convertible, practical station wagon, and the truncated 3 Series Compact hatchback. This breadth gave dealers a complete garage-by-number strategy in one model line for the first time.
Legacy
By the time the E46 left showrooms, more than 3.3 million units had rolled off lines in Germany and South Africa. Its balanced chassis remains the template modern compact executive marques chase, and clean survivors now form the backbone of the affordable BMW enthusiast scene.
