Since September 2021, the BMW 2 Series has moved into its second generation with the G42 coupé, replacing the F22 line while bringing Mexico into BMW’s premium-engineering circle for the very first time. This rebirth matters because it marks the fist BMW ever designed wholly in Mexico—from sketch to production line in San Luis Potosí.
History
The F22 2 Series coupé and convertible bowed out in 2021, making way for the G42. BMW of Mexico led the design effort, making the G42 a milestone not only for the 2 Series lineage but for the brand’s global operations. BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant began series production on 2 September 2021, the same day the model went on sale worldwide.
Production Milestone
Instead of following the typical European plant route, BMW shifted the entire G42 programme to Mexico. San Luis Potosí was already building BMW engines and certain 3 Series components; upgrading it to handle complete high-quality coupé assembly underscores BMW’s confidence in local engineering and logistics.
