BMW filled the compact-coupe niche left empty after the E82 1 Series ended with the F22-generation 2 Series. Available from late-2013 to 2021, this four-seat coupé (and its F23 cabrio stablemate) became the brand’s entry point to rear-wheel-driven sporting style.
History & Introduction
Premiered in October 2013 and entering production that November, the F22 2 Series replaced the E82 1 Series coupé. It carried a new model code and repositioned subcompact BMW coupes under the “2 Series” banner, lining up alongside the larger 3 and 4 Series while offering two doors and seating for four. Cabriolet deliveries began in early 2014, and the range remained on sale through 2021.
Design & Dimensions
Neat, short-overhang proportions package a 2,690 mm wheelbase within a 4,454 mm overall length. Width measures 1,774 mm and the roofline sits just 1,403 mm high, giving the F22 a squat, muscular stance without the controversial flame-surface surfacing of earlier models. Distinctive Hofmeister kinks and twin-kidney grilles tie it unmistakably to BMW’s 2010s design language.
Variants & Successor
Coupe and convertible retained separate codes throughout their life: F22 for fixed-roof and F23 for soft-top. The pair eventually bowed out in 2021, handing the entry-coupe reins to the next-generation G42 2 Series.
