Lada 21099

Based on the front-wheel-drive VAZ-2108 platform, the Lada 21099 was a notchback saloon variant developed by AvtoVAZ in the late Soviet era. It filled the niche for a compact three-box sedan while keeping the mechanical package of the popular Samara hatchback.
Development & Role
The 21099 took the running gear and 4.0-metre footprint of the original 2108/2109 hatchbacks and grafted on a boot, creating a conventional three-volume silhouette that appealed to buyers wanting a separate luggage compartment. Built from 1987 (as indicated by type-coding tradition) and produced right through the post-Soviet transition, the model bridged the gap between the utilitarian 2108 and the more modern 2114 that eventually replaced it.
Design & Dimensions
Overall dimensions of 4 006 mm in length, 1 650 mm in width and 1 402 mm in height put the 21099 firmly in the European C-segment of the late 1980s. The extended rear overhang added 280 mm of boot length compared with the hatchback donor, yet wheelbase and cabin proportions remained unchanged, so passenger space was identical.
Market & Legacy
Marketed domestically as the "dёtyuznik" (three-box) and in some export markets simply as the Samara saloon, the 21099 offered an inexpensive sedan format during Russia’s early 1990s economic turbulence. Reliable, easy to repair, and compatible with 2108/2109 parts, it remained a common sight on post-Soviet roads well into the 2000s until the Lada 2114 finally superseded it.
