Between 1953 and 1958, Aston Martin revived the Lagonda marque with the 3-Litre, a four-door that melded British craftsmanship with a 140 bhp twin-cam six courtesy of W.O. Bentley.
History
Following the short-lived Lagonda 2.6-Litre, David Brown introduced the Lagonda 3-Litre as the second model of his stewardship. Built at Aston Martin’s Feltham works until 1958, the car served as the range flagship until the more muscular Lagonda Rapide was drawn up to succeed it.
Design & Engineering
Walter Owen Bentley’s oversquare 2.9 L straight-six, breathing through twin overhead cams and twin SU carburettors, produced 140 bhp and pushed the near-five-metre saloon to 167 km/h. Beneath the flowing steel coachwork sat a 1600 kg chassis with independent front suspension, live rear axle, and drum brakes all round—robust and refined for grand touring.
Legacy
Only 270 examples left the factory over five model years, making the 3-Litre one of the scarcest post-war Lagondas. Its blend of David Brown’s styling cues and Bentley-derived engineering created a discreet but desirable Continent-gobbling saloon, influencing the Rapide that followed and locking the Lagonda name into Aston Martin lore.
