From 2010 to 2020, the Aston Martin Rapide brought four-door practicality to a brand famed for two-seat coupes, occupying a rare space for handcrafted luxury sports saloons with British pedigree.
History & Birth
Aston Martin’s first series-production four-door since the 1976–1989 Aston Martin Lagonda, the Rapide owed its existence to early sketches by Marek Reichman in 2005. He completed the initial design in just seven weeks, and after four months of engineering effort, a running prototype appeared at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. Production approval followed, ushering the saloon into showrooms through the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and production commencement at Magna Steyr’s plant in Graz, Austria in May 2010.
Design & Proportions
The Rapide stretches 5 019 mm long yet stands only 1 360 mm tall—just 123 mm taller than the DB9 Coupe from which it borrows core architecture—maintaining Aston Martin’s low-slung silhouette. Its wide 1 928 mm stance and dorsal haunches give longitudinal seating for four while presenting unmistakeable front grille and side-strake visual cues of the marque’s contemporary range.
Legacy
Ten years of production saw 3 300 Rapides built, each hand-finished in Austria before final commissioning at Gaydon. When production ceased in 2020, the Rapide left behind Aston Martin’s singular contribution to the shrinking luxury four-door GT niche, paving conceptual ground for the battery-electric Rapide-E and influencing later Lagonda revival plans.
