Replacing the first-generation Vanquish in 2007, the Aston Martin DBS V12 is the marque’s flagship grand tourer spun from the DB9 chassis and tuned to deliver 570 hp of naturally-aspirated V12 performance.
Origin
The DBS V12 arrived as Aston Martin’s top-shelf sports car in 2007, slotting above the DB9 while in turn being replaced by a new-generation Vanquish in 2012. It revived the historic DBS name last used on the 1967–1972 model, signaling a return to a more overtly driver-focused flagship.
Design & Chassis
Beneath the sculpted aluminum body lies the bonded-aluminum VH architecture shared with the DB9, stretched to 4 721 mm long, 1 905 mm wide and only 1 280 mm tall. Aggressive front intakes, carbon-fiber splitters and a deployable rear spoiler separate the DBS visually from its sibling while keeping weight in check.
Performance
Up front sits a hand-built 6.0-litre V12 producing 570 hp, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or optional Touchtronic automatic gearbox. The result is a top speed north of 300 km/h and 0–100 km/h in a little over four seconds, enough to rival contemporaries from Ferrari and Bentley.
Legacy
Although production ended in 2012, the DBS V12 cemented Aston Martin’s modern image as a maker of brutally fast grand tourers. Its powertrain and aerodynamic lessons fed directly into the 2012 Vanquish, and the model continues to attract collectors drawn to its combination of old-school V12 character and early-21st-century British craftsmanship.
