Born in Italy during the country’s post-war industrial rebound, the Alfa Romeo G1 (1921-1923) stands as the marque’s first production model after Nicola Romeo took control and rebadged the company in 1920.
Genesis
Manufactured from 1921 to 1923, the G1 replaced the wartime A.L.F.A 40/60 HP and served as the immediate predecessor to the better-known Alfa Romeo RL. Just 52 examples left the Portello works, making it among the rarest pre-war Alfas to survive today.
Design & Engineering
The car adhered to European luxury-car conventions of the day with its imposing 4.49-metre length and rigid-axle chassis. A sizeable 3.3-litre side-valve six supplied power, positioned far rearward for near-even weight distribution, while rear-wheel brakes (fitted only on the rear axle) reflected period braking standards.
Performance
With a dry weight of 1 500 kg the G1 achieved a top speed around 138 km/h—remarkable for the very early 1920s. Its torquey six-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed gearbox allowed respectable acceleration on the primitive roads of post-WWI Europe.
