Acura TL

From 1995 to 2014 the Acura TL served as Honda’s luxury division flagship sedan, leap-frogging the outgoing Acura Vigor and rounding the brand firmly into the North American premium market.
Generations
Acura rolled out four distinct TL generations. The first, launched in 1995 for model-year 1996, established the formula of front-wheel-drive luxury paired with a V6 engine. Generation two through four refined the styling and technology, with the final iteration unveiled in 2008 and produced through 2014 before the TLX took over the mantle.
Market Position & Sales
The TL quickly became Acura’s volume leader, outselling every other model until the MDX crossover passed it in 2007. In 2005 it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States, sitting just behind the BMW 3 Series.
International Variants
Between 1996 and 2000 the same basic car served two roles in Japan: the Honda Inspire and, from 1996-2004, the Honda Saber, providing domestic buyers a larger 5-seat alternative to Honda’s domestic sedans.
Legacy
By 2014 the TL’s aging sedan format was combined with its sportier sibling, the TSX, into the all-new TLX. Today the four sequential generations remain a familiar sight in the used-car market, remembered for spacious interiors and generally solid resale values.
