Unveiled at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the Maserati Ghibli III marked the Trident’s return to the mid-size luxury sedan arena. Slotted below the Quattroporte, it remade Maserati’s volume strategy and carried the brand into electrified powertrains before bowing out at the end of 2023.
Design & Dimensions
Stretching 4 971 mm long and 1 945 mm wide on a 1 461 mm roofline, the third-generation Ghibli combined the low-slung, cab-rear proportions of a grand tourer with executive-class cabin space. Its scalloped flanks and concave grille—accompanied by frameless door glass—signaled Maserati’s shift from curvaceous grand tourers to sharper, more contemporary lines.
Production Timeline
Series production ran from the 2014 model year through December 2023, making the Ghibli a ten-season stalwart. Annual outputs peaked in the mid-2010s before gradually tapering; final units left the Mirafiori plant with subtle farewell badging and a limited-run Ultima specification.
Market Position
Positioned beneath the flagship Quattroporte, the Ghibli became Maserati’s global volume sedan and spearheaded the brand’s push into China and North American fleets. Its credits include the brand’s first diesel engine (in Europe) and, later, mild-hybrid and V8 Trofeo derivatives that bookended the model’s life cycle.
