Origins
Giugiaro’s Turin studio built the first Medici—Medici I—on a Maserati Indy chassis in 1974 for the Turin Motor Show. A second iteration, Medici II, appeared two years later with detail tweaks including a longer rear quarter and full-width taillight band, both cars established as pure styling exercises for Maserati rather than pre-production pilots.
Design Impact
The long-hood, cab-rear layout framed by crisp folded edges previewed themes later seen in mainstream European sedans. Observers quickly identified Medici cues in 1975 Lancia Gamma, 1976 Lancia Thema, and several Japanese executive cars, confirming Giugiaro’s influence across the decade.
Namesake
By invoking the Renaissance-era Florentine Medici dynasty, Maserati underlined the car’s mission: to fuse mechanical prowess with patron-like craftsmanship, mirroring a family that once financed art and culture.
