Lexus debuted the original RX 300 at the 1997 Chicago Auto Show, calling it a ‘Recreation Cross-Country’—RX—vehicle. Built on an adapted Camry platform, the model deliberately sacrificed some off-road ability in favor of smoother ride quality and easier access for urban families, establishing the template later followed by nearly every premium maker.
Generations & Key Updates
The first generation (1998–2003) paired a 3.0-liter V6 with on-demand AWD. 2004 brought a longer, stiffer second-gen RX 330/350, now offered with Lexus’s first hybrid SUV powertrain in 2005. The 2010 third generation added F-Sport trim and touchscreen Remote Touch, while the 2016-current fourth generation migrated to Toyota’s GA-K platform and debuted a three-row RX 350L variant alongside refined 450h and 500h hybrids.
Engineering & Features
Across generations, Lexus prioritized quiet cabins via acoustic glass and extra under-body damping, pioneered adaptive headlights and panoramic cameras as standard safety fare, and used the RX as the testbed for its hybrid AWD system that combines electric rear-axle drive with a transverse petrol engine up front.
