Since 1998 the Lexus IS has served as the marque’s compact-yet-sporty offering, slipping into the lineup as its smallest model until the CT hatch arrived in 2011. First marketed to Japan as the Toyota Altezza, the IS carved out a niche below the larger Lexus ES and planted Lexus firmly in the entry-level executive market.
History
Lexus launched the IS series globally for the 1998 model year while Toyota continued to market its near-twin—the Altezza—domestically until 2005. Positioned as a sport-oriented, entry-luxury sedan, the line filled the gap between the flagship LS and the front-drive ES, giving Lexus a genuine rear-drive sport-sedan alternative.
Market Position
For more than a dozen years the IS was the smallest automobile Lexus produced, a deliberate move to court younger buyers and European-brand shoppers seeking compact dimensions without sacrificing Toyota-grade reliability. The arrival of the hybrid CT hatchback in 2011 bumped the IS up a notch, yet the car remains the brand’s core compact executive sedan.
Nameplate Evolution
Even after the Altezza name was retired in Japan, the IS designation has continued unchanged worldwide, anchoring Lexus’s role in the compact executive segment. Global models have simply been known as the IS—no suffix or generational tag required for buyers to recognize the line two decades on.
