Introduced in 1993, the Lancia Delta II represents the second generation of Lancia’s small-family hatch line, built to succeed the rally-bred original and carry the name into the Nineties and beyond. Its extended production run makes it a milestone for Fiat-era Lancia design continuity.
History
The Lancia Delta II arrived four years after the final Integrale rally weapons rolled off the line, signaling a pivot from motorsport hero to mainstream family transport. Developed on the Fiat Tipo platform shared with the Alfa Romeo 145 and 146, it kept the tall greenhouse and practical hatch format while shifting focus to comfort and running costs.
Design
Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign gave the Delta II a softer, more rounded shape that replaced the sharp, boxy lines of its predecessor. Flush glazing, integrated bumpers, and a distinctive raised beltline traded rally aggression for aerodynamism and a Euro-friendly urban footprint.
Production
Built initially at the Fiat Pomigliano d’Arco plant, the model remained on the market even after newer Lancia offerings debuted. With no direct successor ever launched, the Delta II continues to satisfy niche demand in certain markets, quietly keeping the classic Delta nameplate alive more than three decades on.
