On the streets of Seoul since 2003, the Kia Morning has served as Kia’s frontline city car, slotting beneath the Rio in size and above the former Hyundai Atos that it effectively replaced. Sold everywhere from Taiwan to Chile under the Morning name (and as the Picanto elsewhere), it stands as one of South Korea’s longest-running small-car nameplates.
Global Naming & Production
While the car is marketed as the Kia Picanto in Europe and most of the world, domestic buyers know it as the Kia Morning. Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Chile also use the Morning badge; Vietnam adds the “New” prefix, and Taiwan once offered a renamed EuroStar variant. Malaysian distributor Naza rebadged it as the Suria. Manufacturing is centered at the Donghee joint-venture plant in Seosan, South Korea, with complete knock-down assembly handled in several overseas markets to keep prices low.
Design Positioning
Kia targeted first-time city buyers and fleet operators seeking the tiniest footprint that still accommodates four usable seats and a 5-door layout. Despite continuous updates, the package has stayed compact—around 3.5 m long—making it ideal for congested urban cores where parking space comes at a premium.
Product Lifespan
Introduced in 2003 as a replacement for the Hyundai Atos, the Morning entered its third global generation in 2017 and remains in production as of 2024. Over two decades it has never carried a direct Kia successor, illustrating an uninterrupted focus on the entry-level segment.
