Kia entered the dedicated-EV era in March 2021 with the EV6, a compact crossover that marks the brand’s first model built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). It also pioneers Kia’s new EV naming ladder and promptly won the 2022 European Car of the Year award.
History & Milestones
Unveiled in March 2021, the EV6 is Kia’s first ground-up electric vehicle and the initial product to ride on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP architecture. This move separated Kia’s purpose-built EVs from its earlier electrified ICE models and set the tone for an entire EV series planned from EV1 through EV9. Weeks later, the car’s significance was confirmed when it tallied the most votes from 61 European jurors to earn the 2022 European Car of the Year title.
Design & Dimensions
Sized as a compact crossover, the EV6 stretches 4680 mm long, spans 1880 mm wide and stands 1550 mm tall. The tapered roofline and 2900 mm wheelbase—long for the segment—translate into generous rear-seat space without the tall hood traditionally required by combustion drivetrains.
Platform & Engineering
Built on the E-GMP platform that also underpins the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV6 adopts an 800-volt electrical architecture enabling ultra-fast DC charging and bi-directional power delivery. The flat skateboard floor houses the battery, drives motors at one or both axles, and allows for rear-wheel, all-wheel, and high-performance GT variants, all while maintaining a low center of gravity.
