Jaguar Mark VII

Introduced at the 1950 British International Motor Show, the Jaguar Mark VII carried the XK engine into a full-size luxury saloon and restarted Jaguar’s naming count at seven to avoid clashing with Bentley’s Mark VI.
History & lineage
Produced from 1950 to 1956, the Mark VII bridged the gap between the pre-war-derived Jaguar Mark V and the later refined Mark VIII. Jaguar’s internal sequence had considered a Mark VI badge for a Mark-V-based XK-powered prototype, but only two of those cars were ever completed.
Design & size
The Mark VII’s body was a stretched, four-door saloon that measured 4 991 mm long, 1 854 mm wide, and 1 600 mm tall. Its styling retained the familiar Jaguar grille and sweeping wings while adding more interior space for rear passengers—a design tuned for both domestic chauffeur use and sporting private ownership.
XK powertrain
The car’s heart was the twin-cam straight-six XK engine launched the previous year in the XK120. This engine gave the large saloon the performance edge needed for both relaxed high-speed touring and early rally successes.
Legacy
The Mark VII cemented Jaguar’s reputation for building fast, refined luxury saloons able to compete with larger-engined rivals. Influences from its chassis and body development carried through to the Mark VIII and Mark IX, shaping the template for the big Jaguar saloons of the 1950s.
