From 1990 to 2006, the Infiniti Q45 served as the very first flagship for Nissan’s fledgling luxury division, squaring off with the Lexus LS 400 and Acura Legend in North America’s suddenly red-hot premium-sedan arena.
Launch and Timing
Introduced for the 1990 model year, the first-generation Q45 marked Infiniti’s opening move into the North American luxury market. By beating replacement-cycle schedules of European marques, the car positioned Nissan alongside Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s Acura in showing that Japanese engineering could credibly challenge Cadillac, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Position in the Brand Lineup
As the inaugural product line, the Q45 remained Infiniti’s flagship until the 2006 model year. Every other Infiniti variant—sedans, coupes and crossovers—referenced the Q45’s standards for refinement and technology, making it the yardstick against which the rest of the portfolio was measured.
Legacy
Over its 16-year run, the Q45 established Infiniti’s reputation of blending Japanese manufacturing discipline with luxury amenities and approachable pricing. When the curtain finally closed in 2006, it left behind a template that later Infiniti flagships (M, Q70, and now Q80) have continued to follow.
