Infiniti FX

Marketed from 2002 to 2019, the Infiniti FX (later rebranded QX70) became Infiniti’s first large dedicated luxury crossover, moving the brand away from truck-derived utilities while bridging sport-sedan handling with SUV practicality.
History
Infiniti introduced the FX for the 2003 model year, effectively replacing the smaller body-on-frame Infiniti QX4. Positioned as a mid-size luxury crossover, the FX was sold through two generations until global production ceased in 2019 as the brand reorganised its SUV line-up and transitioned to the QX65 successor.
Generations & Name Change
The original 2002–2008 FX (Series S50) arrived in FX35, FX45 and performance FX50 trims. A second generation, launched for 2009, brought redesigned styling, more technology and updated powertrains. Beginning with the 2013 model year the model was renamed QX70 to follow Infiniti’s global Q/QX naming scheme, although its structure and positioning remained unchanged.
Legacy & Distinction
Critically, the FX/QX70 represented a deliberate split from Nissan platforms; it carried no direct Nissan badge-mate and was engineered specifically as a rear-biased, driver-focused SUV. Despite never being offered in Japan, the model helped cement Infiniti’s identity overseas and influenced later Infiniti designs that prioritised road dynamics over off-road capability.
