Unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, the Infiniti Essence is a one-off concept sports car created to celebrate Infiniti’s 20th birthday and introduce the brand’s first hybrid-electric performance statement.
Concept & Purpose
Infiniti debuted the Essence in March 2009 strictly as a design study and anniversary centerpiece. Rather than preview a specific model, it signaled Nissan’s luxury arm embracing hybrid technology while emphasizing dramatic proportions and craftsmanship that would influence later production vehicles.
Design & Dimensions
At 1,960 mm wide and 1,310 mm tall, the Essence sits low and wide in the classic grand-tourer stance. Its long hood, cropped rear deck, and flowing shoulder line create a muscular but elegant silhouette, intended to marry Japanese restraint with European GT aesthetics.
Hybrid Powertrain
Beyond its aluminum-intensive body, Essence features a hybrid-electric system—Infiniti’s first venture into combining petrol and electric propulsion for high performance rather than pure fuel economy. Exact output figures were left intentionally vague, underscoring the concept’s role as a technology and branding lighthouse rather than a production prototype.
