Launched in 1990, the Hyundai Scoupe (sometimes styled S-Coupe) was Hyundai’s first attempt at a sporty 2-door package, creating an affordable “coupe for the masses” from the humble Excel platform. Discontinued after just five model years, it gave way to the more upscale Hyundai Tiburon, yet it remains a noteworthy footnote in Korean performance history.
History and Background
From 1990 to 1995, Hyundai sold the Scoupe as a standalone coupe spinoff of the Excel—no direct predecessor existed because the brand had not previously fielded a sports body. Two minor facelifts punctuated its run, the last arriving for the 1993 model year before production ended to make room for the Tiburon.
Design and Dimensions
At 4 215 mm long, 1 640 mm wide, and only 1 328 mm tall, the Scoupe sat low yet light on the road, its aerodynamic nose, flush headlamps, and subtle rear spoiler signaling sporting intent while still sharing much of its structure with the everyday Excel.
Name and Legacy
“Scoupe” blended the words sporty and coupe and was intentionally pronounced like "scoop." Owing to its five-year lifespan and Hyundai’s small North-American dealer footprint at the time, surviving cars are now rare curiosities that foretell the more serious sport coupes the Korean manufacturer would pursue starting with the Tiburon.
