Introduced in 2021, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first electric crossover under its dedicated Ioniq EV sub-brand. Riding on the bespoke E-GMP architecture, the compact SUV kicked off Hyundai’s far-reaching EV strategy.
Origins and Platform
The Ioniq 5 is the inaugural Hyundai to use the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), an 800-volt skateboard that can deliver 10–80 % DC fast-charge in around 18 minutes. Launching ahead of other Ioniq-named models, it positioned Hyundai as a first-mover among full-line brands into purpose-built EVs.
Design and Size
With a 3000 mm wheelbase squeezed into a 4635 mm long body, the crossover channels a retro hatchback silhouette and 20-inch aero wheels. Measuring 1890 mm wide and 1605 mm tall, its footprint is close to compact SUV competitors but cabin space rivals larger mid-sizers thanks to the flat floor.
Markets and Timeline
On sale globally from early 2021 with rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, the Ioniq 5 arrived in North America later that year and won 2022 World Car of the Year. Production continues worldwide without a designated successor.
