Slotting below the larger CR-V in Honda’s global SUV line-up, the XR-V is a subcompact crossover engineered from the Fit/Jazz platform but dressed in a taller, tougher-looking body. It has become one of Honda’s top sellers in the fast-growing Chinese utility-vehicle segment since its launch.
Size & Stance
At 4328 mm long and 1610 mm tall, the XR-V occupies the exact footprint demanded by urban buyers: longer than a super-mini yet noticeably shorter and lower than a conventional compact SUV. The 1772 mm width translates into a genuinely usable five-seat cabin without the bulk that makes city driving tiresome.
Generations
The XR-V debuted in late 2014 for the 2015 model year, sharing its underpinnings with the Vezel/HR-V twins sold elsewhere but featuring unique bumpers, lighting signatures and a slightly stretched wheelbase tailored for Chinese tastes. A mid-cycle refresh arrived in 2019 bringing sharper LED lamps and a revised 1.5 L turbo option, while an all-new second-generation model was introduced in late 2022.
Market Position
Created specifically for China by the GAC-Honda joint venture, the XR-V competes head-on with the Volkswagen T-Cross and Geely Binyue. Competitive pricing and Honda’s trusted brand image quickly made it one of the country’s best-selling small SUVs; combined XR-V and Vezel sales regularly top 15,000 units a month.
