Honda’s WR-V is a subcompact crossover that arrived in 2017 to serve fast-growing emerging markets, slotting beneath the HR-V and BR-V depending on where you shop. By widening the Fit/Jazz formula into a small, tall SUV, Honda created an affordable first step into the crossover lifestyle.
History & Markets
Honda staged the WR-V’s world debut at the 2016 São Paulo International Motor Show, targeting South America and India with a first generation tuned for rougher roads and tight city streets. A completely new, second-generation version broke cover in Indonesia in 2022 and is now extending the nameplate’s reach deeper into Southeast Asia.
Design & Body
At just 4 000 mm long and 1 740 mm wide, the WR-V fits parking bays that larger crossovers can’t touch. The 1 130 kg curb weight reflects the donor Fit/Jazz underpinnings in the first generation, while the 2022 update sits on a shortened BR-V platform for increased stiffness and slightly higher ground clearance.
Generations
Generation 1 (2017-2021) was essentially a Fit wearing rugged bumpers, roof rails and a reshaped bonnet, giving drivers more ride height without stepping up to Honda’s HR-V. Generation 2 (2022-present) shifted to the BR-V’s shortened architecture, adding a taller roofline and blockier proportions aimed squarely at Indonesia and adjacent markets.
