Between 1996 and 2002, Honda quietly served the Japanese market with the Orthia, a Civic-based compact wagon that blended hatchback dimensions with utility. With just two generations and zero export sales, the Orthia remains a rare curio that ended its run by morphing into the Honda Airwave.
History
Honda added the Orthia to its domestic line-up in February 1996, positioning it simultaneously at Honda Verno and Honda Primo dealerships as a "Sport Utility Wagon." Based on the sixth-generation Civic platform, Orthia production wrapped in 2002, making room for the Airwave successor.
Design & Size
At 4 570 mm long, the Orthia stayed true to Japan’s kei-adjacent wagon ethos, wrapping Civic running gear in a boxy but compact estate body. The name references Artemis Orthia from Greek mythology—not a typical source for a Japanese small car.
Markets & Legacy
Sold exclusively in Japan, the Orthia never left domestic shores; its modest sales left minimal international footprint. Its chassis and concept, however, carried forward into the 2005 Honda Airwave, ensuring its DNA survived well beyond its six-year life.
